On Tuesday, People magazine reports that first lady Michelle Obama traveled to Africa Monday with her mother and two daughters, Sasha and Malia.
“I’m traveling with my mother and my two daughters,” the first lady joked when asked about the trip. “This is the special girl-power unit of the Obama household. We left the president behind because he’s a boy.”
Michelle went on to claim that the reason for the trip, which includes stops in Morocco and Liberia, is to promote the Let Girls Learn initiative. The goal of the program is to assist young girls in obtaining a quality education.
The first lady also reportedly met with several Liberian government officials prior to her meeting with President Ellen Jonson Sirleaf.
“I want you to keep fighting and stay in school,” Obama told the girls in attendance. “I’m here to shine a big, bright light on you.”
Kosar, a Political Insider contributor, had a very different view of the trip.
In his article, Kosar notes that Sasha and Malia Obama have been enrolled in a private school, costing a whopping $70,000 per year in tuition. Malia also plans to take a “year” off before attending Harvard University at a cost of $59,950 per year.
“This trip to Morocco will accomplish nothing, while taxpayers will receive a bill for millions of dollars in airfare, security, hotels, designer clothes and upscale restaurants,” Kosar commented. “This is simply the Obama family using their final opportunity to take an extended ‘free’ vacation while still in power. Outrageous!”
