After the Syrian government launched a chemical weapons attack against its own people, Donald Trump reacted swiftly and fired about 60 missiles at a Syrian airbase.
It was a very clear message that Trump intends to enforce the red line that President Obama backed away from.
Now, Russia and Iran are threatening to do something about it if it happens again.
From The Daily Mail:
Iran and Russia have threatened to hit back if the US follows up on its air strike in Syria last week, ramping up tensions in the Middle East.
President Trump infuriated Moscow when he authorised an airstrike on a Syrian air base on Friday, which killed at least six people.
But in a joint statement the Russian and Iranians said: ‘We will respond to any aggression’.
reported that a joint command centre in Syria said: ‘What America waged in an aggression on Syria is a crossing of red lines. From now on we will respond with force to any aggressor or any breach of red lines from whoever it is and America knows our ability to respond well.’
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier condemned ‘flagrant US aggression on Syria’ following the Tomahawk strike on al-Shayrat.
Also, the future is really up to Assad.
If he uses nuclear weapons again, there will be consequences.
If not, odds are he will be able to keep going business as usual in Syria at least while the international community figures out what to do with him.
There has been talk about overthrowing the Assad regime but a Middle Eastern power will likely have to step up to the plate with some ground troops if that’s every going to get done. I can’t imagine Trump would ever commit to a ground war considering his comments on the campaign trail about Iraq.
