Pence shrugs off sinking poll numbers amid rocky week

Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence cautioned that it’s too early to write off Donald Trump’s chances of winning in November despite new poll numbers showing Hillary Clinton to be leading by a significant margin.

In an interview with “TODAY Show” host Savannah Guthrie, Pence cautioned that the race is still in its early stages and that the only poll that “really matters” is on Nov. 8. New polls are showing Trump to be losing by double-digit margins, including new surveys by Fox Newsand McClatchy that show Clinton to be leading by 10 and 15 points, respectively.

“Let me say it’s very early in this campaign still,” Pence told the host. “The only poll that really matters is on Election Day, and I have to tell you as we canvased out west this week, Donald Trump in Florida, we’re seeing tremendous crowds, tremendous enthusiasm.”

“And I really do believe it’s because Donald Trump’s message of a stronger America at home and abroad is resonating with millions of people, and I’m grateful for the support that we’re receiving from Republicans, independents and Democrats across this country,” Pence said.

The past week has been marked by chaos for the Trump campaign and questions by several Republicans after the candidate continued his feud with the family of slain Army Capt. Humayun Khan after his father, Khizr Khan, spoke out against Trump at the Democratic National Convention last week.

Trump also publicly declined to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan ahead of his primary election next week and GOP senators up for re-election, including Sens. John McCain and Kelly Ayotte.
