Dr. Kelli Ward Says Sen. McCain Should Resign Because Of His Diagnosis

Dr. Kelli Ward, an osteopathic physician, who plans to run against Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake in the 2018 Republican primary, requested to Sen. John McCain to quit from his position during an interview Thursday.

She made the surprising comments less than 24 hours after the news appeared that McCain had a serious condition called glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“I hope that Senator McCain is going to look long and hard at this, that his family and his advisers are going to look at this, and they’re going to advise him to step away as quickly as possible, so that the business of the country and the business of Arizona being represented at the federal level can move forward,” she stated.

Ward, who earlier tried to dismiss McCain from office during the 2016 Republican primary election, continued that President Donald Trump cannot proceed with his agenda if Congress stays “at a standstill while we wait for John McCain to determine what he’s going to do.”

If McCain decides to resign, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, would assign an interim senator, and because Ducey is a Republican, and “Arizona law requires that the replacement is of the same political party as the departing senator,” as National Review reported, it’s evident that the replacement will be Republican.

The problem if that happens are special Senate election in 2018, and it’s probable that a Democrat could win that election. Otherwise, if McCain stays in office, the GOP would be set until 2022, when his tenure expires.

Another problem is his condition. Dealing with cancer will decrease senator’s strength and time, as well as, his capability to support his colleagues in achieving the president’s agenda. Anyhow, if a tweet about Vietnam War veteran who turned senator is taken into consideration, the illness might not be a problem:

At the end, the final decision will be made by McCain and his family, and nobody else. Whatever choice he will make, the Americans will respect, due to his wide congressional experience and his prior military service.
