Some White House officials said, President Donald Trump ordered an “emergency meeting” to discuss about a global cyber-attack that struck around 100,000 organizations in 150 countries, according to Europol.
CBS News reported that the president directed Tom Bossert, the Homeland Security Adviser to host the meeting on Friday night, and according to another senior White House official, there was a follow-up meeting the very next day.
The details of the meeting are yet to be disclosed. The cyber-attack is considered to be the largest online shakedown ever seen and it is also considered as an “escalating threat” after it struck 200,000 victims worldwide since Friday, the head
of Europol, Europe’s policing agency said.
Europol spokesman Jan Op Gen Oorth told The Associated Press that it is still uncertain what the major motivation was, apart from the most obvious – money.
The attack itself included, freezing users’ computers, encrypting their data and even seeking money from them via bitcoin payment. At first it was $300 then it rose to $600 just so it can devastate the files shortly after. It took effect all over the globe, with Britain’s National Health Service, Russia’s Interior Ministry and companies like Spain’s Telefonica, FedEx Corp. in the U.S., and French carmaker Renault.
A young Brit cyber-security researcher unintentionally found out of a so-called “kill switch” that stopped the unknown outbreak, the malicious software would possible be shared so much faster and further.
The researcher is 22 years old and known as “MalwareTech” but wanted to stay anonymous.
He stated he noticed a hidden web address in the “WannaCry” code and made it official by signing into its domain name. That action, which is worth just $10.69, switched the path of the attacks to the server of Kryptos Logic, the security company where he works. The server manages as a “sinkhole” to obtain information about malware – and in Friday’s situation stopped the malware from escaping.
No matter who did this, or whatever he wanted to achieve, this must be stopped immediately. We don’t want someone to dig in our privacy and manage our computers without us knowing. That’s why we have Donald Trump as the president of this great country to summon an emergency meeting for this to be solved instantly.
