According to the Obama administration, at least 12 of the former detainees who were once held at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have returned to the Middle East only to attack U.S. forces and our allies. In fact, according to U.S. officials, six Americans are dead by their hand.
This admission came from a Paul Lewis in March, a Pentagon official who oversees Guantanamo for the Defense Department, and there has been no elaboration to this shocking news since under the pretense of being classified.
Here’s the crazy part — all of these detainees were released under the Bush administration. Even so, it is causing many to question President Obama’s plans to close down the Guantanamo facility.
One official was quick to throw a red herring into the issue, saying that, “Because many of these incidents were large-scale firefights in a war zone, we cannot always distinguish whether Americans were killed by the former detainees or by others in the same fight.”
So… it might be OK because they weren’t the ones actively killing members of our military — just providing cover fire maybe?
Lawmakers have been hard after this since the discovery, and in response were given classified information about the attacks and which detainees were responsible. But the lawmakers cannot share the information with public due to its classification.
Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., an opponent of Obama’s Guantanamo agenda, was provided documents so secret that even members of her senior staff, some with top secret clearance, were unable to read it. Ayotte said she finds that ridiculous.
“There appears to be a consistent and concerted effort by the administration to prevent Americans from knowing the truth regarding the terrorist activities and affiliations of past and present Guantanamo detainees,” Ayotte wrote to the president in a letter to President Obama. She is demanding he declassify the information.
I mean, come on, a little transparency would be nice.
